The Best Bed

Colonial Americans put great stock in their beds (called beadsteads) and in their bedrooms. The best bedstead was found in the “bedroom of state” – or the guest bedroom. So significant were these beds – or bedsteads – that they were often mentioned in great detail in the wills of those more prominent.

In more modest homes, the best bed might have been a “slawbank” – taken from the Dutch “sloap bancke” – which was a space saving device that was hinged on one side of a wall and folded up when not in use… a precursor to the modern hide-a-bed of today. Our best beds are presented on the following pages.
